She's My Girlfriend
We were just walking along the brick pavement, laughing and reveling in the warmth of holding hands. Such a simple act, yet so profound in emotion.
Out of the blue, I turned to Gill and asked her in that half-joking-mostly-serious tone that we all use when we are both full of hope, and terrified.
"So, will you be my girlfriend then?"
I asked.
Her heady giggling reply will be a memory I will always treasure. Turning a light shade of red, she said yes.
Being the archive-organised-freak that I am, we now have a new date to celebrate. The day that everything became official, and I became a one-woman girl.
~~*~~
On a separate interconnected note, one that doesn't contain tidings quite so joyful,
I told her I loved her.
And she was speechless. She just lay there, and looked at me. Not a word, a breath, a squeek came from her still form. I think her shock is what hurt me more than her silence.
I moved too fast I guess. After all, we have been only dating for three weeks. But I have been in love with her for so long now, that the words just flowed from my lips. Words that would leave me saddened and disappointed by the silence that followed them.
I expected words. Something. Not just to be left hanging. Even just, "I don't know what to say" or "I'm not sure yet" or "I think I love you too" or "Thank You"! All those would have been equally heartbreaking, but none more so than, saying absolutely nothing.
I guess she can't say "I love you too".
